Twisters Review

It’s been nearly twenty years since Jan de Bont’s 1990s disaster classic confirmed our fear of tornados with the movie Twister. It was a smash hit earning nearly 500 million at the box office making it Warner Brothers’ highest-grossing film until the first Harry Potter.

So it’s a bit surprising that it took 18 years to get a sequel. However, a sequel would likely be a repeat of the original, it’s probably a good thing they waited so long. This way a new generation can be terrified of this natural disaster.

Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Javier (Anthony Ramos) used to be a storm chasing team, but after a tragedy, they go their separate ways. Years later Javier comes to Kate for help with his latest tornado-chasing project. Lured back to Oklahoma Kate meets Tyler Owens (Glen Powell) and his crew, his seemingly wildcard team has it more together than anyone realizes.

More young stars round out the cast; Sasha Lane (American Honey), Brandon Perez (Nope), Katy O’Brien (Love Lies Bleeding), and David Corenswet (Next Superman).

I bought stock in Glenn Powell all the way back in 2016 with Everybody Wants Some. Buying his stock that early would’ve been like buying Apple stock back in the early 1980s. I’m about to buy my second private island.

2024 is his year and we are just living in it. With Hit Man and Twisters Glenn is proving that he is ready to be Hollywood’s next big star of the future. He can do it all, but in Twisters he just has to look cool in a Cowboy hat, plus a shot of him in a white t-shirt in the rain for the ladies.

My wife and I saw this on Thursday night and received a cool magnate, the ticket taker told us girls had been coming in and was disappointed his face was not on the magnate, if this does not scream movie star I don’t know what does.

On the flipside of Twisters stars is Daisy Edgar-Jones. Admittedly she is someone I cannot figure out. I don’t think she is bad, but I don’t think she pops. She’s like Dakota Johnson, she’s been very good in a few small things, but never rises above her material, when bland she is bland.

Maybe I need to watch her performing in her natural English accent. Everything I have seen her in she’s played American and she feels so flat, I just don’t see the movie star quality there. But in interviews for the film she and Glenn have crazy chemistry, I just wish it was on screen.

My wife and I saw this in Dolby at the Town Center AMC in Leawood. Dolby Atmos provides an encapsulating sound experience for the film, which was perfect for Twisters.

There is a scene when Kate and Tyler get caught in a terrifying tornado, enhanced by the Dolby sound that completely immerses you in the film so it feels like you're being pummeled by the twister.

It’ll be interesting to see how this film plays at home because the Dolby immersive experience enhanced the film. Without the immersion, the CGI-heavy film might not feel as scary and not keep its grip on the audience.

The CGI does look good, but there is quite a lot. People might begin reaching for their phones at home while all the CGI debris flies around.

Lastly, I need to know if the Board of Oklahoma Travel commissioned the soundtrack. Just like the cast, the soundtrack consists of the latest country stars all singing about Oklahoma. In case you forget what state they’re in, there will be a song to remind you. In 20 years that soundtrack will have aged like milk.

Twisters is a dumb fun time at the movies. Except when they “Nolan” explain the science of tornados, which was more than expected. However, you won’t regret seeing this sequel in theaters, especially Dolby Atmos.

3.5/5 Stars
