Review of Cinemark Merriam and XD Theater

Location: Merriam, KS

Date of Visit: August 15, 2024

Movie Seen: Alien: Romulus

Price: $44.75 for Two People

Two Movie Tickets were $30.50 for a primetime showing on Thursday night. Went the week prior and it was one dollar more.

A large popcorn and a large soda are $14.25, which is only a dollar more than ordering a medium both. Compared to the bigger chains, this is a good price.

Cleanliness: The theater was clean enough, not sticky, doesn’t smell bad, but it was not immaculate. But it is starting to look like it’s going downhill.

Comfy-Ness: The seats were comfortable. We went to the XD Theater, and we climbed Mt. Everest to get to our seats. People who have trouble with stairs, beware, don't get tickets too far back.

The seats also do not recline. They were like an IMAX theater, so longer movies may become more uncomfortable for some people.

The seats also have a built-in tray, it’s pretty annoying if you do not have food to eat. It’s like you’re in school in the 1950s.

Food Quality: Popcorn was stale and tasted old. Not what you want when you’re going to prime show time hours. I know you’ve been making popcorn all day, but it’s shouldn’t taste like it’s been sitting out all day.

They do not have the Coca-Cola Freestyle machine, smaller chains do not, the soda had good flavor at least.

Overall 7/20.

Maybe this sounds like a harsh rating for the review above, however, I had an additional experience that really put me off of Cinemark.

For promotion, Cinemark was selling a tie-in Xenomorph-head popcorn bucket forAlien: Romulus. They went on sale a week before they announced the sale. So they were already sold out. A shitty way to do business, they’re just lucky the Grain Valley B&B really sucks.
